About a week ago, Andrew (my instructor) told me I should start using the rubber guard setup. I have no idea what random thing the position is called (I've always sort of avoided learning any of the Eddie Bravo names, because they're silly), but it's the basic setup where you hook your arm outside your leg, and then under your knee to cup their shoulder. I know, that's hard to understand. If I weren't so lazy, I'd find a picture.
Anyway, we drilled the setup last Friday night, with the transition to the omoplata. Now, I'm 5 feet tall. I'm not 'leggy', by any stretch of the imagination. I can't easily wrap people up from a mile away with my legs, and I have to modify nearly every technique to account for my body style (as do most people). Moving on...I drilled the rubber guard setup Friday night, and retrained myself to get that setup instead of the normal way I break down the person's posture (I always do some weird thing that doesn't really make any sense to anyone but me, but it's natural now). I don't mean I have 100% cured myself of the weird thing, but that I can actually do this right, if I'm actively thinking about it now.
Last night, a guy that used to train with us pretty regularly came in for the first time in a few months. He's got 8" and 50 lbs on me, easy. I mentally prepared for a little smashing, but rememberd to use the rubber guard. Instead, I submitted him twice in 6 minutes. It works. Damn it, it works.
